"What Is It?" - March 2009

  1. Prizes for this month's challenge go to Dr. Barnes Tatum, Jefferson-Pilot professor of religion and philosophy, and Valerie Justis, Village 401 coordinator. They were one and two years off, respectively, but this month's challenge was tough.

    ANSWER:
Pictured above is the graduating class of 1904.

How can the year be determined?

    1. There is a pile of lumber (middle left) between the group of students and Main Building. This can be seen more easily in the enlarged photo. This pile of lumber is a tip-off that something is up.

    2. If you look closely at Main Building (through, around, and above the trees) you will notice that you see neither the cupola that was on the top of 2nd Main Building, nor the rotunda that was on the front of 3rd Main Building. Again, this can be most easily seen in the enlarged image.

It is therefore possible to deduce that the image is from after the 1904 fire, but before the rotunda was added later that same year.
